Oander Inspires Future Engineers at STEM in The Park Event in Crawley

18 May, 2026 by Barry Mason

This weekend, Oander proudly took part in the vibrant STEM in the Park event held in the Memorial Gardens, Crawley—an initiative dedicated to introducing young people and families to the exciting opportunities within the construction and built environment industries.

The event brought together local organisations and industry professionals with a shared goal: to spark curiosity, encourage hands-on learning, and give children a real-world glimpse into potential future careers. Oander joined the Crawley Borough Council Built Environment Team and Project Centre to deliver an engaging activity designed to showcase the practical side of surveying and construction.

Hands-On Learning in Action

To make the experience interactive and memorable, members of the Oander team created a practical surveying challenge for children attending the event. Participants were invited to step into the role of junior surveyors, using professional equipment to complete a mini-engineering task.

Children were guided through the process of using a dumpy level to measure the height of road pins that had been set at 600mm. They also learned how to accurately measure the distance between the pins using tape measures. The exercise provided a fun introduction to essential surveying skills, giving young attendees a chance to understand how measurement and precision play a vital role in construction projects.

The hands-on nature of the activity proved especially popular, with many children eager to try the equipment and test their measuring skills. By turning technical tasks into an interactive game, the team helped demonstrate how construction careers combine problem-solving, teamwork, and real-world impact.

A Community Event with Real Impact

The Memorial Gardens provided the perfect setting for the day, with the weather holding for most of the event and contributing to a fantastic atmosphere. Families, educators, and industry professionals came together to celebrate construction and explore the many pathways available within the sector.

Events like STEM in the Park play an important role in helping young people discover career possibilities they may not have previously considered. By engaging with the community and sharing practical insights into the industry, Oander is proud to support initiatives that encourage the next generation of engineers, surveyors, and construction professionals.

Looking Ahead

It was a great day enjoyed by all involved, and the Oander team hopes that the experience has inspired at least a few young minds to consider a future in construction. Supporting education and community outreach remains a key part of Oander’s commitment to shaping a sustainable and skilled future workforce.

We look forward to taking part in more events like this and continuing to champion opportunities for young people to explore the built environment.
